We came to Barrel & Ashes on a Saturday day for lunch. The restaurant is located on Ventura Boulevard which means parking is sparse, they do offer valet parking at $6.
The restaurant is not that big and offers “park like” benches as tables, from what I understand if you are a party of 2 you may end up eating next to 2 others you don’t know…I personally love that. They also have a full bar, we didn’t take advantage of any drinks since it was daytime but they offer specialty drinks you may want to check out.
We ordered the fried chicken sandwich with a jalapeno cilantro coleslaw, a brisket sandwich with cheese, a hoe cake and some fries.
The chicken sandwich was by far my favorite, it was juicy, spicy and the bun was soft and sweet making this the just the perfect balance of flavors for me.
The brisket we both found to be a little dry and being a bbq house, I’d of expected the brisket to be the shining star.
The hoe cake is what they are known for…the hoe cake is a corn based “cake” made in a small cast iron skillet…ours came out a little burnt on the bottom which changes the flavor of the cake. I make a corn souffle for thanksgiving that is very similar so for me I could have passed on this very rich side dish.
The fries were fine, a nice size side dish.
The restaurant also charges a “3% healthy surcharge” to the bill, this 3% is of your total bill and it’s to help the employees have health insurance it is not part of your gratuity.
